Ingredients:
- 1 double pie crust recipe (store-bought or homemade)
- 6-7 cups thinly sliced and peeled apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp works well)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Egg wash (1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon milk or water)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out half of the pie crust dough and place it into a 9-inch pie plate.
- In a large bowl, mix together the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat and add the apple mixture. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in the flour and lemon juice and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust and dot with butter.
- Roll out the remaining pie crust dough and cut into strips. Create a lattice pattern on top of the apple filling, or simply place the entire dough over the filling and cut several slits in the top to vent the steam.
- Brush the top with the egg wash mixture.
- Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Allow the pie to cool for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving.
